Kate O'Flynn, Bury Grammar School class of 2003, won the Emmy for supporting actress in a comedy. Widow's Bay took 14 Emmys, more than any other programme.

Kate O’Flynn, a former Bury Grammar School pupil, has won an Emmy. She took Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Patricia in the Apple TV comedy Widow’s Bay.

The award was presented on Monday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. That was early on Tuesday morning in Bury. The result is in the Television Academy’s official winners list, which was compiled by the accounting firm Ernst and Young.

The Bury connection

Bury Grammar School names her among its notable old girls. Its history of girls at the Bury Grammar School site lists “Kate O’Flynn (Class of 2003)” as an “acclaimed actress with leading roles on stage and screen”.

She is in good company. The same list includes:

  • Victoria Wood, the comedian, actress and writer (class of 1971)
  • Victoria Derbyshire, the journalist and broadcaster (class of 1986)
  • Nicola Shindler, the television producer who founded Red Productions (class of 1987)
  • Kate Cross, the England cricketer (class of 2010)

The Girls’ School has been on Bridge Road since 1906, the page says.

After school she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. RADA’s graduate profile records a BA in Acting, class of 2006.

This is not her first award from the North West’s own industry. In 2023 she won Best Performance in a Comedy at the Royal Television Society North West Awards, for the comedy Everyone Else Burns.

Six wins on the night, 14 in all

Her win was one of six for Widow’s Bay in Monday’s televised ceremony. The Television Academy’s winners list shows the show also took:

  • Outstanding Comedy Series
  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, for Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, for Stephen Root as Wyck
  • Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, for Katie Dippold
  • Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, for Hiro Murai

The Emmys ran over three nights this year, on 5, 6 and 14 September. Counting all three, Widow’s Bay won 14 awards. That is twice as many as the next programmes on the Academy’s table, which won seven each: DTF St. Louis, The Traitors and the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show starring Bad Bunny. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, The Pitt and Pluribus won six each.

Programmes with the most Emmy wins at the 78th Emmy Awards: Widow's Bay 14, then three programmes on 7 and three on 6
